The Central Pier Demolition Project involved the staged removal of the deteriorated Central Pier structure within Melbourne’s Docklands precinct. The pier had reached the end of its service life and posed safety, navigational and environmental risks within one of Melbourne’s most prominent urban waterfront locations.
The project required a contractor with specialist marine demolition capability, strong environmental management systems and the ability to operate safely within a highly visible, constrained and publicly accessible environment. We were engaged by Development Victoria to deliver the demolition works in their entirety. We undertook full responsibility for the planning and execution of the marine demolition works, including works both above and below the waterline.
Key elements of scope included:
- Demolition and removal of the existing pier superstructure and substructure.
- Marine-based demolition works undertaken from barges and temporary marine plant.
- Removal of piles, deck elements and associated marine structures.
- Management of demolition works in proximity to adjacent wharves, waterways and public areas.
- Progressive removal and disposal of materials in accordance with environmental and waste management requirements.
The demolition was undertaken in a complex urban marine environment with significant stakeholder, environmental and safety considerations. We successfully delivered the project through detailed planning, sequencing and risk management.
Key performance outcomes included:
- Safe execution of high-risk demolition activities over and within water.
- Effective containment and control measures to protect water quality and marine environments.
- Careful staging of works to maintain navigational safety and minimise disruption to surrounding precinct operations.
- Completion of demolition activities without adverse impact to adjacent infrastructure.
The Central Pier Demolition project demonstrated our capability in:
- Specialist marine demolition of large-scale waterfront structures.
- Managing environmental risk in sensitive, high-profile urban waterways.
- Operating complex marine plant and demolition equipment within restricted access zones.Delivering technically challenging works under intense public and stakeholder scrutiny.
Our experience in marine demolition enabled the safe removal of a legacy asset while laying the groundwork for future redevelopment of the Docklands waterfront. The successful demolition of Central Pier has removed a major safety and navigational risk within Docklands and unlocked opportunities for future waterfront renewal. Our delivery of the works reinforced our reputation as a trusted contractor for complex marine demolition and waterfront infrastructure projects in live urban environments.
